Secret rooms, speakeasies & safe rooms

Bachman Custom Homes designs and builds secret rooms into new custom homes across the Treasure Valley: speakeasies behind Murphy doors and bookcases, hidden closets, hardened safe rooms and integrated gun safes. Our own crews handle most of the framing, electrical and finish work, so each space is planned into the structure from the first drawing.

01 / A QUIET SPECIALTY

Secret rooms,
speakeasies and Murphy doors.

Not every room in a home needs to be on the tour. In our own words, "a distinctive aspect of our expertise is designing and constructing concealed or fortified spaces, including hardened rooms, integrated gun safes, and other custom hidden features." Some clients want a secure place for valuables and firearms. Others simply love the idea of a door that does not look like a door.

We have built these spaces in Parade homes and in private homes, and we keep the details of our clients' homes private. These are the kinds of hidden spaces we build:

  • A speakeasy or bar behind a Murphy door, a bookcase or a paneled wall.
  • A secret room off a closet, a mudroom or a cedar-lined storage room.
  • Hidden storage closets tucked into an entry, a stair or built-in cabinetry.
  • A private retreat, a game room or a kids' hideaway with a concealed entry.

02 / WHAT WE BUILD

Concealed and fortified
spaces we design.

Every one of these spaces is custom, so the right answer depends on your home, your lot and what you want to protect or hide. These are the kinds of spaces we talk through with clients:

  • Hardened rooms framed and finished as part of the house, not bolted on afterward.
  • Integrated gun safes, located and sized early so the framing and finishes work around them.
  • Hidden rooms and concealed entries for a bar, a wine room, storage or a private retreat.
  • Secret doors and hidden closets that blend into millwork, paneling or shelving.

03 / PLANNED FROM DAY ONE

Why these rooms are
planned into the structure.

A hidden or fortified room works best when it is part of the plan from the start. Walls, framing, wiring, ventilation and finishes all have to line up, and a concealed entry only disappears if the trim and paneling around it are built with it in mind.

That is where keeping most of our work in-house helps. Our own team handles framing, electrical and finish work, so the people building the room are the same people who planned it with you. Specialty spaces are part of step four of our process, when we finalize the floor plan, so tell us early what you have in mind.

04 / A STRAIGHT ANSWER

What we do and
do not promise.

We build these spaces to your plan and to code. We do not certify any room against storms, forced entry or ballistics, and nothing on this page is a security rating. If you need a room that meets a specific standard, tell us at the first meeting so the right engineer, door and safe products can be part of the design from the start.

Out of respect for our clients' privacy, this page shows only examples from Parade homes and published plans.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked
questions.

Can you build a safe room into a new custom home?

Yes. Bachman Custom Homes designs and builds hardened rooms and other fortified spaces into new custom homes. We plan the room during floor plan design so the framing, wiring and finishes are built around it. If you need a room built to a specific rating, tell us early so the design can include it.

Do you build secret rooms, speakeasies and Murphy doors?

Yes. Hidden rooms are a favorite of ours. We have built speakeasies entered through concealed rooms, plans drawn with a dedicated secret room and hidden storage closets in an entry. A Murphy door or bookcase door is built into the millwork so it reads as part of the wall. We design each one around your home's layout.

Can a gun safe be built into the house?

Yes. Integrated gun safes are one of the concealed features we build. We decide the location and size during design, so the framing, floor and finishes are planned around the safe instead of fitting it in afterward. Bring the safe you have or plan to buy to the design meeting.

Is a safe room rated for tornadoes or break-ins?

Not automatically. A room is only rated if it is designed and built with products that meet a specific standard, and we do not certify rooms ourselves. If a rated room matters to you, tell us at the first meeting so the right engineer and products are part of the design from the start.

Can you add a hidden room to one of your floor plans?

Usually, yes. Specialty spaces are settled in step four of our process, when we finalize the floor plan, so a secret room, speakeasy, hardened room or gun safe can be worked into most of our plans. Tell us early, so the framing, wiring and finishes are planned around it.
